What are Implant-Related Infections?

Implant-related infections occur when bacteria, fungi, or other pathogens infect medical implants such as orthopedic implants (joint replacements, plates, screws), pacemakers, prosthetic heart valves, or dental implants. These infections can lead to implant failure, severe pain, and systemic complications if not treated promptly.

Causes of Implant-Related Infections

  • Surgical Contamination – Bacteria may enter the surgical site during implantation.
  • Bloodstream Infections (Bacteremia) – Germs from infections elsewhere (e.g., urinary tract infections, pneumonia) can spread to implants.
  • Poor Wound Healing – Slow healing or wound infections can introduce bacteria to the implant.
  • Biofilm Formation – Bacteria create a protective layer (biofilm) on the implant, making infections harder to treat.
  • Weakened Immune System – Patients with diabetes, cancer, or immunosuppressive therapy are at higher risk.

Common Symptoms of Implant-Related Infections

  • Persistent Pain & Swelling – Around the implant site.
  • Redness & Warmth – Signs of localized inflammation.
  • Pus or Fluid Discharge – May leak from the surgical wound.
  • Fever & Fatigue – Indicating systemic infection.
  • Implant Loosening or Failure – The affected implant may become unstable or painful.
  • Difficulty Moving the Affected Area – Especially in joint replacements or orthopedic implants.
