What is Tuberculosis (TB)?

Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious infectious disease caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria. It primarily affects the lungs (pulmonary TB) but can also impact other parts of the body, such as the kidneys, spine, and brain (extrapulmonary TB). TB spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks.

Causes of Tuberculosis (TB)

  • Airborne Transmission – Inhalation of bacteria released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks.
  • Close Contact – Spending prolonged time with an infected person increases the risk.
  • Weakened Immune System – People with conditions like HIV, diabetes, malnutrition, or cancer are more vulnerable.
  • Poor Ventilation & Overcrowding – Living in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces increases exposure risk.
  • Malnutrition – Poor nutrition weakens the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to TB infection and reducing their ability to fight the disease.

Symptoms of Tuberculosis (TB)

  • Persistent Cough (More than 3 Weeks) – May produce mucus or blood.
  • Chest Pain – Discomfort while breathing or coughing.
  • Fever & Night Sweats – Persistent high temperatures and excessive sweating.
  • Unexplained Weight Loss – Significant loss of weight without dieting.
  • Asymmetry in the Smile: A smile that appears unbalanced due to dental or gum irregularities.
